Distinguished and Famous people from Yass Valley

  • Hamilton Hume (1797-1873): An Australian explorer and early settler, Hume was born in Parramatta but later settled in Yass Valley. He is best known for his explorations of the present-day regions of Victoria and New South Wales, including the discovery of the Murray River.
  • Eugene von Guerard (1811-1901): A renowned artist born in Vienna, Guerard migrated to Australia and settled in the Yass Valley area. He is known for his detailed landscape paintings that captured the beauty of the Australian countryside, including many scenes from Yass Valley.
  • Ben Hall (1837-1865): One of Australia's most famous bushrangers, Hall operated in the Yass Valley region. He was known for his escapades and clashes with the law during the mid-19th century.
  • David Unaipon (1872-1967): An Aboriginal Australian preacher, writer, and inventor, Unaipon was born in the Point McLeay Mission in South Australia but spent some time in Yass Valley.
